This policy explains what information Itinerio collects, how it is used, how long it is kept, and what choices you have. It applies to the Itinerio website and any related pages we operate. We have kept it in plain language on purpose: if a section is unclear, write to us and we will explain it, and we will update this page if our answer changes.

Information we collect

There are two categories. The first is information you give us directly, such as the content of an email sent to contact@itinerio.com or a correction you report on a guide. We use it to reply and to fix the page. The second is technical information collected automatically when pages are served: your IP address, the browser and device you are using, the pages you open, where you arrived from, and what you clicked. We also infer an approximate location from your IP address, usually at city level.

We do not ask for or knowingly store sensitive categories of personal data such as health, religious or political beliefs, biometric identifiers, or financial account details. If you send us such information in an email, please do not, and we will delete it on receipt. We do not build profiles of individual readers in order to target advertising at them directly.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small files stored by your browser. We use them for three purposes. Some are strictly necessary, for example remembering a choice you made in the site interface, and the site cannot work correctly without them. Others are used to measure traffic so we can see which guides are read and which are not, and which links are useful. The third group comes from advertising partners and is described in the next section.

You can clear or block cookies through your browser settings. Blocking the strictly necessary ones may cause parts of the site to behave differently, and blocking measurement cookies simply means we receive less information about how the site is used. Your browser's built-in controls are the usual place to manage this.

Third parties, analytics and advertising

We work with third-party providers, including Google, that may collect data through their own cookies and similar technologies to deliver and measure advertising. Google's advertising cookies are used to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Partners may build a profile of your interests in order to show personalized advertising across sites.

If you would rather not receive personalized advertising, you can opt out here: Google Ads Settings and aboutads.info choices. These pages let you review and change what ad personalization is based on. You can also opt out of third-party vendor cookies for personalized advertising through the same tools, or through the Network Advertising Initiative and the Digital Advertising Alliance opt-out pages linked from them.

How we use data, and our legal basis

Where we rely on cookies to operate the site, the basis is that the site cannot be provided as you have asked for it without them. Where we measure traffic, the basis is our legitimate interest in understanding which guides are useful and in keeping the site running. Where we serve advertising, the basis is our legitimate interest in funding the site, and the consent you give for advertising cookies where your jurisdiction requires it. Where you email us a correction, the basis is our legitimate interest in publishing accurate information and our obligation to reply to you.

On that basis we use data to operate and secure the site, to measure and improve the guides, to respond to your messages, to show advertising, and to detect and prevent abuse. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use what we collect to build a profile for cross-site behavioural advertising of our own.

How long we keep it

Server logs that record your request, including your IP address and the page requested, are kept for a short operational period and then deleted. Analytics data is kept in aggregate for a limited window and then discarded. Messages you send us are kept as long as needed to deal with your request and to keep a record of any correction we made, after which older messages are deleted.

Data held by third parties is governed by their own retention policies, which you can review on their websites. We do not keep personal data longer than we need it for the purpose it was collected, and we do not keep it because it might be useful at some point in the future.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, to object to certain processing, to restrict processing, to object to direct marketing, and to withdraw consent at any time where processing relies on consent. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that already happened.

To exercise any of these rights, write to contact@itinerio.com with the subject line "Data request". You do not need to explain yourself in detail. We will confirm receipt, and we will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law, which is one month in the case of a request under the GDPR. If we cannot fulfil a request, we will say so and explain why. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

Children

The site is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13, or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

International transfers and security

Our site is hosted on infrastructure in the United States, and some of our service providers process data in other countries. Where personal data is transferred outside the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we rely on an appropriate safeguard, such as standard contractual clauses, and we limit the data transferred to what the service requires.

On security, the site is served over encrypted connections, administrative access is restricted to the people who need it, and we keep the amount of personal data we hold deliberately small. No system is perfect, and we would rather state plainly what we do than imply a level of protection we cannot guarantee.

Changes to this policy and how to reach us

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by a revised date at the bottom of this page. Where a change affects how we use data you have already given us, we will say so in the updated text. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.

Questions about this policy, or about privacy at Itinerio generally, can be sent to contact@itinerio.com. If you prefer post, write to Itinerio Editorial, PO Box 2458, New York, NY 10116, United States, and mark the envelope for the attention of the Privacy team.
